Enclosure and placement recommendations: Recommended only for enclosures with at least 3 square feet of floor space and low sides to allow heat to escape. Start with the bulb positioned approximately 14–16 inches above the enclosure floor. Adjust bulb height as needed, checking the temperature at tortoise level to reach the appropriate basking temperature for your species. Maintain a cooler area so your tortoise can move away from the heat.

Monitor basking temperatures and UVB levels regularly. UVB output can decline before the bulb stops producing light.

Actual lifespan varies with operating conditions. Expected bulb life does not guarantee effective UVB output for the full 5,000 hours.

*Use of a quality ceramic-based fixture that is fixed in place and not moved will increase the lifespan of the bulb and be safer than a plastic fixture that can fail or melt.
*Because of the way ballasted mercury vapor bulbs work, they will not function on a dimmer, they need to be used at full power or completely off.
*Under normal 12 hours per day use, this bulb will produce ideal amounts of UVB for about a year, and should be replaced annually.
