Strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum) is a low-growing clover species with rounded green leaves and distinctive pink, strawberry-shaped flower heads. It spreads easily and grows well in moist soils and open grassy areas.

Strawberry clover is beneficial for tortoises because it is safe to eat in moderation and provides fiber and natural plant nutrients that support healthy digestion. The soft leaves and flowers are easy for tortoises to graze, making it a good plant for encouraging natural foraging behavior. When offered as part of a varied, mixed-plant diet, strawberry clover can help mimic the diverse vegetation tortoises encounter in the wild.

For warm climates like Las Vegas, plant tortoise-friendly seeds such as chicory, clover, and dandelion in early spring or fall when temperatures are milder. Choose a well-draining area with partial to full sun, loosen the top few inches of soil, and lightly scatter the seeds over the surface-these varieties germinate best when not buried too deep. Gently rake or press them into the soil, keep the area consistently moist (but not soaked) until established, and expect quick sprouting within 1-2 weeks. Once growing, water moderately and allow the plants to mature naturally, creating a hardy, grazing-friendly patch for your tortoises.
