Peat moss is a dark, lightweight substrate that we use as an additive in our outdoor enclosures to help conditions the soils we use. It holds moisture well, and is commonly used by gardeners to add life to the soil and help new plants grow. Some people use it for higher humidity type tortoises indoors also. While we prefer the cleanliness and texture of coco softbed for indoor tortoise use, peat moss is a low cost alternative to it. These "bales" are 2.2 cubic feet highly compressed and very dense. The bags weigh around 35 pounds each, and the peat easily breaks apart when opened.

Many peat moss companies have added multiple soil conditioning chemicals, fertilizers and other additives to their peat moss which makes them unsuitable for reptile use. Ours is pure untainted peat with nothing added.
